Benefits to Giving Your Children Chores
Today’s kids have a TON of things to fit into their busy schedules–school, homework, sports, music, and other hobbies. But many children are missing a key part of childhood: chores. Chores are proven to help children build skills that are valuable in school AND life. Here are key benefits to having your child do chores:
- Foster a strong work ethic
- Promote positive behavior through routines
- Develop independence and life skills
Examples of age appropriate (Grades 3-8) chores:
- Prepping snacks and simple meals
- Gardening and weeding
- Vacuuming and dusting
- Doing laundry
- Cleaning the interior of the car
- Loading/unloading the dishwasher
In the beginning, the reality is that chores often equate to more work for parents (identifying the right ones, teaching your child, reminding them, etc.), but this is also a critical part of parenting! Starting your child early with chores will make it easier for them to learn responsibility and independence as they get older.
